Penny Ann (Thomsen) Werling, 68, of Atalissa died unexpectedly at her home, Tuesday, Feb. 21

Family and friends went to a graveside service in the Rochester Cemetery Monday, Feb. 27, where where she was laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, family asks that memorials be sent, as they will be forwarded to a local Al-Anon cause. Cards and memorials may be mailed to 103 Fruitland Rd., Fruitland, IA 52749.

Penny, daughter of Thomas Thorvald, and Barbara Jean (Chapman) Thomsen, was born on Friday, Feb. 11, 1955, in Muscatine.

She graduated from Tipton High School, with the Class of 1973.

Penny married John Wayne Werling in Rochester on Dec. 8, 1979. They later separated, but would still come together for important family events.

Penny worked for over 30 years at Sheller Globe Corp. (now IAC) in Iowa City.

Being a country girl, Penny enjoyed the outdoors. She loved camping, riding horses and spending time with family. She was also an avid Buffalo Bills fan.

Penny is survived by her daughter, Brandy Marquez of Fruitland; sons, Jeff Heathman (Holly) of Ely; and Kyle Werling of Iowa City; sisters, Marie McLeod (Larry) of Central City, and Joleen McGee of Newton; brothers, Richard Thomsen (Connie) of Columbus Junction and John Thomsen (Jacie) of Tipton; sister-in-law, Leigh Ann Thomsen, of Moscow; brother-in-law, Bill Ely, of Haines City, Florida; and grandchildren, Mason, Vaughn and Emmett Marquez, and Bailey, Lane and Cael Heathman.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Barbara Thomsen; her sister Jeanne Ely; her brother, David Thomsen and brother-in-law Ray McGee.
