The West Liberty softball team completed a week of perfection after a slow start to the year, rattling off a pair of wins over Monticello along with a perfect day in Anamosa as they knocked off the Blue Raiders as well as Davenport Central.
On Monday, June 3, the Comets started their week with a home double header against Monticello.
In the first game, the Comets jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before it was immediately wiped away in the top of the second by the Panthers.
With a pair in the bottom half of the frame, the Comets reclaimed their lead. West Liberty clung to a one run lead until the bottom of the sixth when they added three more runs.
An inconsequential run from the Panthers in the seventh saw the game end with an 8-5 victory for the home team.
The second game featured more of the same as the Comets grabbed an 8-3 victory after jumping ahead to a 8-1 lead before the end of the fourth inning.
On Thursday, the Comets headed to Wilton to take on the Beavers. The Comets found themselves trailing 4-1 at the start of the fourth inning before their bats finally caught fire.
The Comets went on to score four over the next three innings, allowing one run that ultimately forced the game into extra innings as the Beavers scored one in the bottom of the sixth.
The Comets dominated the extra frame, tallying four runs in the top of the eights to take a 9-5 victory.
On Saturday, the Comets headed to Anamosa for two games against Davenport Central and Anamosa.
In their first matchup against the Blue Devils, the Comets trailed through the duration, finding themselves down 6-4 headed into the sixth.
West Liberty weren’t to be denied their perfect week, as they plated a total of 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 16-6 mercy rule victory.
Their second matchup of the day against the host Blue Raiders saw the Comets jump ahead early to a 10-0 lead before Anamosa was rallied to score five in the fifth. An extra run in the seventh for Anamosa did little to turn the tides of the game as the Comets brought their perfect week a close.
The Comets sit at 11-4 overall on the season and look ahead to a three-game homestand over the next week against Mid-Prairie (doubleheader on June 17) and Iowa City Regina (June 20).
