Questions with school district's policy

Posted

Why is it the WLCSD has a School Policy “West Liberty Community School District Acceptable?

Use Policy (#400.6) which states: “The District will use protection measures to protect students from inappropriate access, including sites that include obscenity, child pornography or are harmful to minors.”

Plus a Anti-Bullying/Harassment Policy (#104) which states: “……any actual or perceived trait or characteristic…….which creates an objectively hostile school environment that meets one or more of the following conditions:

- Has a substantially determinantal effect on the student’s physical or mental health;

- Has the effect of substantially interfering with the student’s academic, performance, or

- Has the effect of substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.”

Yet the Media Policy (#604.4) allows the Superintendent to develop procedures for selection and replacement of both library and instructional materials, the weeding of library and instructional materials………”

But this policy does not address library items “that include obscenity, child pornography or are harmful to minors!"

Shouldn’t the Library have the same protections for a good learning environment as the Anti-Bulling policy and the computer use policy??

We ask the Superintendent and the School Board to review Policy # 604.4 and update it to include similar protections for our students.
