The Rotary Club of West Liberty may rebuild its concession shack at the Muscatine County Fairgrounds in West Liberty.
The aging stand in the center of the fairgrounds is suffering with a decaying wall structure, and the organization is comparing the costs of repairing the structure with replacing it all together with a new building.
Work on repairing the building started in May, but when volunteers found more damage than they expected on the decades old building that has a large shelter awning for dining, the group halted work and decided to consider other options.
Former president Cliff McFerren said the group is even considering creating a “four season” building that would have larger kitchen facilities, allowing the group to not only continue to serve their turkey legs and various sandwiches during the fair, but possibly bring back their popular chicken barbeque that was held as a fundraiser at other times during the year. The facility was not used during the fair due to problems with the structure.
McFerren said the group hopes to be able to do most of the work within their own club.
Rotarians also served their annual special appreciation lunch to West Liberty School District teachers and staff on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the high school to help inaugurate the new school year.
The organization, which is now led by Jake Burroughs, has been dealing with membership problems since a change in their dues structure, but is working to resolve the issues.
The group meets weekly on Friday at noon at the West Liberty Public House in the main business district.
The organization also has a quarterly 6:30 evening meeting yet to be announced in October. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact a member.
