Dicen que las personas necesitamos la variedad en la vida, y los residentes de West Liberty ahora tendrán la oportunidad de leer el trabajo de una nueva escritora en las páginas del Index.
Vanessa Espinoza, una profesora de español de West Liberty High School y residente del pueblo, escribirá la columna de cultura latinoamericana durante las próximas semanas mientras yo estoy entrenando al básquetbol.
Vanessa es mi compañera de trabajo y mi amiga, ¡y yo estoy 100% seguro que ella hará el trabajo lo mejor que se pueda hacer!
Vanessa nació en el estado de Zacatecas, México, y vivió los primeros años de su vida en un rancho bien chiquito llamado el Rancho La Hoya. Cuando tenía seis años su familia se trasladó a Iowa, donde su papá encontró un trabajo con IBP en Columbus Junction. La familia se instaló en Conesville y Vanessa se graduó de la secundaria en 2010.
Ni siquiera estuvo en la universidad un año cuando decidió ser filántropa para su comunidad, creando una beca para los graduados de Columbus Junction.
“Me era muy importante recompensar a los jóvenes que hayan sobrepasado la adversidad desde una edad joven,” dice Vanessa.
Después de la secundaria, Vanessa asistió a Indian Hills Community College en Ottumwa antes de inscribirse en la Universidad de Northern Iowa, de donde se graduó en el 2015 con un título en Español, con un enfoque en el aprendizaje. Al graduarse, consiguió en las escuelas de Mid-Prairie, dando clases de ESL (Inglés como Segundo Idioma) y español. Vivía en el pueblo de Washington y otra vez, no demoró en contribuir a su comunidad.
“Un grupo de nosotros allí en Washington decidimos fundar una organización sin fin de lucros que enfocara en la población latina de aquel pueblo,” explica Vanessa. “Organizamos varios eventos: clases para la ciudadanía estadounidense, festivales, oportunidades de verse con doctores.”
Vanessa se quedó en Washington por dos años antes de seguir sus estudios, trasladándose para Iowa State University. Pero mientras hacía progreso hacía su título posgrado, se le vino otra honra: en el 2018, ¡se recibió en el Salón de Fama Latino del estado de Iowa! La organización dijo que, a pesar de su edad tan joven, ella “ha programado iniciativas innovadoras, ha sido exitosa en su vida académica, y ha planeado su carrera profesional, pero siempre con un enfoque de laser en levantar la comunidad latina en Iowa.”
Vanessa cumplió con su maestría de Iowa State University en mayo del 2019. Trabajaría un año en la Universidad de Iowa antes de conseguir su trabajo actual con la High School en julio del 2020. Su esposo, Alfonso, y ella no dudaron en comprarse una casa en el pueblo y mudarse aquí.
Éste era el trabajo con que soñaba,” se confiesa. “Había hecho unas pasantías aquí cuando estuve en UNI y anhelaba ser parte de este distrito. Me encanta que aquí todos se sientan que pertenecen.”
Esto no será la primera vez que Vanessa escribe. En el 2020, escribió un ensayo para una compilación llamada Nosotros los entretejidos, que trataba de la experiencia de las mujeres mexicanas en los Estados Unidos.
“Estoy muy emocionada para escribir en el Index,” dice Vanessa. “De cierta forma, nosotros tenemos un periódico verdaderamente bilingüe. Y me encanta vivir en West Liberty. Hay una belleza en regresar a una comunidad donde la gente se ve como uno, y celebran su cultura e identidad.”
Seguro que pronto, la comunidad estará celebrando a su nueva columnista latina también.

They say that people need variety in their lives, and the residents of West Liberty will now have the opportunity to read the work of a new writer in the pages of the Index.
Vanessa Espinoza, a West Liberty High School Spanish teacher and town resident, will write the Latin American culture column for the next few weeks while I'm coaching basketball.
Vanessa is my co-worker and my friend, and I am 100 percent sure that she will do the job as well as it can be done!
Vanessa was born in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico, and lived the first years of her life in a very small town called Rancho La Hoya. When she was six years old, her family moved to Iowa, where her dad found a job at IBP in Columbus Junction. The family settled in Conesville, and Vanessa graduated from high school in 2010.
She wasn't even in college a year when she decided to be a philanthropist for her community, creating a scholarship for Columbus Junction graduates.
“It was very important to me to reward young people who have overcome adversity from a young age,” says Vanessa.
After high school, Vanessa attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa before enrolling at the University of Northern Iowa, where she graduated in 2015 with a degree in Spanish with a focus on teaching and learning. Upon graduation, she was employed in the Mid-Prairie schools, teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) and Spanish. She lived in the town of Washington and again, she was quick to contribute to her community.
“A group of us there in Washington decided to found a non-profit organization that would focus on the Latino population of that town,” explains Vanessa. “We host various events: US citizenship classes, festivals, opportunities to meet doctors.”
Vanessa stayed in Washington for two years before continuing her studies, transferring to Iowa State University. But as she made progress toward her graduate degree, another honor came her way: in 2018, she was inducted into the Iowa State Latino Hall of Fame!
The organization said that despite her young age, she "has programmed innovative initiatives, has been successful in her academic life, and has planned her professional career, but always with a laser-like focus on raising up the Latino community in Iowa."
Vanessa completed her Master's degree from Iowa State University in May 2019. She would work for a year at the University of Iowa before landing her current job with the West Liberty High School in July 2020. She and her husband, Alfonso, did not hesitate to buy a house in town and move here.
“This was the job I always dreamed of,” she confesses. “I did a practicum here when I was at UNI and longed to be a part of this district. I love that everyone here feels like they belong.”
This won't be Vanessa's first time writing. In 2020, she wrote an essay for a compilation called We the Interwoven, which dealt with the experience of Mexican women in the United States.
“I am very excited to write for the Index,” says Vanessa. “In a way, we have a truly bilingual newspaper. And I love living in West Liberty. There is a beauty in coming back to a community where you can see people who look like you, and celebrate their culture and identity.”
Without a doubt, the community will soon be celebrating their new Latina columnist as well.
