The Durant City Council has awarded the contract for construction of two courts for the racquet sport known as pickleball at Jaycee/Dutton Park to All American Concrete Inc. of West Liberty.
The council awarded the contract for All American Concrete’s bid of $131,868 during its regular meeting held on Nov. 12 due to the Veterans Day holiday on Nov. 11.
The bid amount included a concrete surface for $54,010 and a fence windscreen for $3,670.
The council approved a resolution approving and confirming plans, specifications, form of contract and estimate of cost for the courts during its Aug. 26 meeting.
Bid letting was held Nov. 5.
The estimated base bid by Martin & Whitacre Surveyors & Engineers Inc. of $154,895, included an estimate of $63,830 for the concrete surface. The engineer’s bid was $5,000 for the fence windscreen.
The council approved funding up to $160,000 for construction of two courts for pickleball at the meeting on Aug. 12.
The proposal called for the removal and replacement of the tennis courts at the park. The north half of the surface would have fencing and paint for two pickleball courts, including netting between the two courts.
“The courts will run next to each other, going north and south. The south end of the space will remain basketball/multipurpose space,” the proposal said.
The work is to begin by May 1, 2025, and be completed by July 1, 2025, unless adjusted, contract documents said.
In the beginning, the city council committed $50,000 towards the project, Deana Cavin, city operations officer/clerk, previously said.
Cavin said during the Nov. 12 meeting that the Park Board’s donation drive was at $17,800, with a goal of $20,000.
Pickleball uses composite or wooden paddles to hit a perforated, plastic ball “over a 34-inch-high net until one side is unable to return the ball or commits a rule infraction,” according to USA Pickleball, which has over 78,000 members. The sport is played indoors and outdoors.
