The West Liberty girls’ soccer team split their week last week, winning a road match against Clinton while dropping matchups to Mid-Prairie and Mediapolis.

The week started Monday as the Comets battled the Golden Hawks, and the rain, for the second home game of the season.

Neither team was able to muster a goal in the first half, and the breakthrough didn’t come until the 52nd minute when the Golden Hawks put in their opening goal to take the 1-0 lead.

The Comets responded 13 minutes later in the 65th to equalize. The score remained 1-1 through regulation.

As the teams headed to overtime, it was Mid-Prairie who found the golden goal to grab the winner as the Comets fell 2-1.

On Thursday, the Comets took a trip to Clinton to play the River Queens. The hosts took the lead in the first half, netting a goal before the Comets equalized in the second half off the boot of junior Pearson Hall.

The game remained scoreless through the remainder as well as the two overtime periods and the teams headed to a penalty shootout.

The Comets fended off the River Queens thanks to three makes from the spot while senior goalkeeper Maelyn Wainwright held the hosts to two to capture a 3-2 victory in the penalty period.

Friday’s game saw the Comets played their second match on home turf as they paired against the Bulldogs. However, the Comets fell 2-0 in the matchup after conceding two in the opening half and were unable to recover.

The Comets will continue their season with a trio of games over the next five days. The Comets sit at 2-3 on the season and will matchup against Wapello Thursday, Bellevue Friday and Northeast the following Monday.

Boys win home opener

The West Liberty boys’ soccer team captured a victory in their home opener against Mid-Prairie before suffering a lopsided defeat at the hands of Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

The Comets ushered in the future with their first match on their new home pitch Monday as they braved the conditions against the Golden Hawks.

West Liberty poked home their lone goal of the match in the fading moments of the first half. The Comet defense locked up the remainder of the contest for the 1-0 victory.

On Friday, the Comets headed to Cedar Rapids to play Jefferson. The J-Hawks netted three goals in the opening half of the game before the Comets stemmed the bleeding at the half.

A fourth goal in the second half elevated the score to 4-0 as the Comets were held scoreless for the first time this season.

The Comets will hit the road on Friday to play Bellevue before hosting Prince of Peace Prep next Monday.
