The West Liberty boys’ soccer team grabbed a pair of victories last week, shutting out Prince of Peace Prep at home 4-0 before traveling to Beckman Catholic to knock off the ninth-ranked Blazers away from home.

The Comets sit at 6-2 on the season and perfect atop the River Valley Conference standings at 5-0

On Monday the Comets hosted Prince of Peace Prep.

The Irish entered the contest 2-1 on the year looking to knock off the Comets in their fourth meeting in as many years. However, the Comets had other plans.

Scoring opened early as sophomore Uriel Andrade found the back of the net in the sixth minute.

The Comets continued to apply pleasure throughout the first half before breaking through for their second goal in the 26th minute as senior Bruce Songa found the back of the net for his first of two, as the Comets headed to the break leading 2-0.

Junior Manu Garcia Blanes tallied the third goal in the 59th minute and Songa followed in the 74th to lift the Comets to a 4-0 victory which saw the Comets put 25 shots on goal.

Midweek, the first set of Soccer rankings surfaced as the Comets saw themselves ranked fifth in the poll.

Then, on Monday, the second release boosted West Liberty up to No. 3 only behind RVC foes Iowa City Regina and West Branch.

The Comets suddenly found themselves looking in the face of a top 10 matchup as they headed to Dyersville to take on Beckman Catholic.

The Blazers entered the contest 4-1 on the season with the winner looking to solidify their claim on the RVC standings.

It would be West Liberty which would claim the first half, netting one to take a 1-0 advantage before the break.

Beckman fought, scoring one of their own. But a two goal performance for Andrade along with an insurance goal from Songa saw the Comets claim a 3-1 victory in the match.

The Comets look ahead to a colossal matchup against No. 1 Iowa City Regina, a regular conference foe and the team that sent the Comets off at last year’s state tournament on Friday, before matching up against Tipton the following Monday.

Girls on both sides of a shutout

The West Liberty girls’ soccer team split their matchups last week, collecting both a shutout win over Bellevue and a shutout loss at the hands of Beckman Catholic.

The Comets currently sit at 5-4 on the season.

On Monday, the Comets jumped on Bellevue from the opening kickoff netting a pair of goals in the opening seven minutes to set the tone for the contest early.

West Liberty went on to net a third in the 17th minute off the foot of junior Pearson Hall, one of two Comets to record a hat trick on the night.

Senior Arely Murguia found the net for the Comets’ fourth goal just before the halftime whistle in the 36th minute.

Freshman Brisica Garcia Vasquez found her second goal in the 43rd minute before completing her hat trick four minutes later in the 47th, as Hall netted her two in the 51st and 74th.

The Comet dominated the night, putting 17 shots on goal.

Friday saw the tables turn for the Comets. The unbeaten Blazers would not be denied as they netted a pair of goals in the first half, before scoring five in the second half to take a 7-0 victory.

The Comets will matchup Thursday against Williamsburg, Friday against Iowa City Regina and Monday against Tipton.
